The map of our garden of delight in God
We have invited you to imagine your own version of the garden of disciplines you've read about in Part 3 of "Awaken Delight." Here is our rendition of it!Â
Scroll below the picture to read an excerpt from the book that describes it. Have fun: Can you spot in the image every item Stephanie mentioned?Â
 Can you spot...
- the greenhouse of prayer
- the fountain of worship
- the meadow of Scripture
- secluded areas, like a bench or a pond
- public areas, like walkways and gathering places, as well as tables for a banqueting feast
- fruit trees, a vegetable garden, and flowers
What else does this image inspire you to discover as ways to awaken our delight in God? Spend a moment meditating on the various aspects of this garden.
Consider watching the video at the top of this page again, with each of these elements in mind.
Excerpt from the book | the map of our garden of delight in God
Imagine a lovely garden, each discipline a feature. God invites us to cultivate the habit of dwelling there with him. So let’s get familiar with it.
Picture a hidden pond, or a bench perfectly nestled under rose bushes, completely cut off from the world: some habits, such as silence, solitude, and meditation, are secluded areas of this garden. They speak mostly to our identity, rooted in our intimacy with God. We’ll focus on these habits of inner growth first in this chapter.
Add a cluster of comfortable chairs under a vine-trellising pergola. Such gathering areas are quintessentially other-focused and represent service, hospitality, missions, evangelism, and discipleship. They speak of our purpose, rooted in God’s work for us in his kingdom. We’ll ponder these outward love-themed disciplines next.
Now, envision flowers and fruit trees everywhere. Maybe even a vanilla orchid or two! Picture flowers for bouquets, luscious berries ready to be plucked, and trees blossoming around secluded benches and hidden ponds, at the lawn’s edges and around the pool. Each flower and fruit tree represents a habit that’s both individual and corporate: gratitude, simplicity, stewardship of time and resources, learning, lament and suffering, fasting, and all forms of arts and co-creation. They’ll be our final focus.
Additionally, three immovable landmarks are core habits that anchor the whole garden and orient us: picture Bible intake as a large meadow, prayer as a greenhouse, and worship as a cluster of fountains.
Finally, an indispensable brook runs through this garden, a water source bubbling with life and sustaining each discipline. His name is Jesus.
